Aromatherapy: The Natural Healer

The New Year is exciting as we set new goals and go forward achieving them with enthusiasm. We are also in the midst of seasonal change that can stress our immune systems, making us more susceptible in catching a flu. We all do our best to avoid those pesky sniffles and coughs by taking good care of ourselves and nourishing our bodies, but sometimes it’s just not enough and our bodies become run down and weak. So when this gets the best of you, we have just the right thing for you so that your enjoy the festive season – Aromatherapy, an alternative medicine and holistic healing of the body through the usage of therapeutic essential oils.

Aromatherapy is considered to have healing properties and is sometimes used with Massage Therapy. For example, a massage for sore muscles might include Peppermint and Eucalyptus. There are numerous benefits of Aromatherapy Massage ranging from relaxation, mental clarity, headache alleviation, etc. Aromatherapy Massage also balances and harmonizes the body by reducing stress and strengthening the entire body through support in its own healing process.

Essential oils used in Aromatherapy not only prevent you from catching the flu, but also help clear your sinus congestion, reduce aches and pains, and most importantly, they will help you rest by letting your body fight the discomfort naturally. The majority of essential oils are antiseptics and bactericides, which means they inhibit and can often kill the growth of bacteria. One of the most common and popular essential oils is Lavender oil. Lavender inhibits the spread of virus and bacteria because it is an antiviral agent. It is an excellent decongestant, relieves headaches and sore muscles. It also helps you relax, de-stress and reduces anxiety levels.

Other essential oils that are great for fighting cold and flu bugs include Cinnamon Bark, Citronella, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Juniper Berry, Pine, Rosemary, Sage, Tea Tree, and all the citrus oils.

Here are a few ways you can use your essential oils so that you can enjoy the holidays:

To Relieve Headache and Congestion

You can use any of the following essential oils by themselves or in a combination in a diffuser to help with headaches or congestion: Eucalyptus, Thyme, Rosemary, Peppermint, or Frankincense.
For more intense therapy, steam inhalation may help you to decongest and help you fight an infection. Combine 2 drops of Lavender essential oil to 1 drop of Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Thyme, or Lemon, then add 1 to 3 drops of this mixed blend into a bowl of steaming water. Cover your head with a towel, close your eyes and inhale the aromatic steam a few times. Repeat every 3 to 4 hours or as needed.

To Relieve Body Aches

To help with the aches and pain that can come with colds and flu, blend 4 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Marjoram in a tablespoon of carrier oil (such as sweet almond or olive oil) and massage the mixture gently into and around your joints.

To Relieve Fatigue or Insomnia

Studies have shown that specific essential oils used in aromatherapy can help relieve stress, relax the body, and promote better sleep. This can be done by taking a warm aromatic bath with 3-4 drops of Chamomile, Frankincense and/or Clary Sage before going to bed. You can also sprinkle or spray a couple drops of Lavender onto your pillow.

Having pain, or the flu is really no fun at all, but Aromatherapy essential oils can be an important part of your arsenal to help your body fight its way back to health.
